Lesson 2 What is chords? —Tones composing chords and Rule of writing—
- What is chords
When more than two tones sound at the same moment, it is called “Chord”. We usually put 3 or 4 tones skipping one-by-one on a scale. (In fact, 1st-3rd-5th or 1st-3rd-5th-7th)
For example, a chord, C (C major), is composed of C-E-G.
A chord, Cm7 (C minor seven) is composed of C-E♭-G-B♭.
Generally, 1st (root) is basic sound, 5th adds thickness, 3rd decides major (bright) or minor (dark), 7th adds characteristic mood.
3rd is 2 tones above 1st, 5th is 3 and half tones above 1st, 7th is a half below 1st.
